Lapis Lazuli


Lapis Lazuli is a rock composed mostly of Lazurite, Sodalite, Calcite and Pyrite. It is deep blue with gold flecks from the pyrite and white streaks from the calcite. The more prized Lapis is that which has more intense blue, whereas lower grade Lapis is slightly paler blue with more white than gold flecks, and is referred to as Denim Lapis. Its name comes from the Persian word ‘lazhuward’ meaning ‘blue’.

Lapis Lazuli has been used by healers, priests and even royalty since ancient times, to bring wisdom and power and for ability to develop psychic abilities .

Lapis Lazuli was mined in Afghanistan as early as 3000 BC. Through trade, Afghanistan was the source of Lapis for the ancient Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans. This prized stone was used by the Pharaohs and used around the eyes and for the eyebrows on the well known funeral mask of the Pharaoh King Tutankhamun, and beautiful amulets made from the stone were discovered in his tomb.

Lapis Lazuli began to be exported to Europe towards the end of the middle ages for the valuable ultramarine dye obtained by grinding it into powder. Ultramarine was the finest and most expensive of all blue pigments and was used in the paintings of some of the most renowned artists of the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

High grade Lapis Lazuli is becoming harder to find as many of the best deposits have already been mined. Whilst some mines have been found in Chile, Italy, Russia and the USA, some of the best Lapis comes from the ancient mine in Afghanistan.

Lapis Lazuli harmonises the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the body. Imbalances between these planes can lead to dis-ease, a sense of lack of purpose and depression. Once harmony is restored, it brings about multi dimensional cellular healing and a deep inner self knowledge. It echoes the vibrations of truth and enlightenment, representing the universal truth.

Lapis Lazuli is related primarily to the brow chakra, opening the third and balancing the energies of the throat chakra, the voice of the body.

Spiritual Benefits

As a stone for the third eye, or brow chakra, the energy of Lapis Lazuli assists in developing intuition, channeling and psychic abilities and powers. By opening the third eye and activating the pineal gland, it can open your connection to the angel and spirit realms. Its powerful energy promotes spiritual growth and spiritual health. A healthy and balanced brow chakra allows us to see clearly. It heightens our perception and intuition, our thoughts come with depth and clarity giving profound conviction and faith and trust in oneself. From this begins enlightenment. Lapis Lazuli facilitates spiritual journeying and dream work, bringing information from ours dreams into our consciousness where they impart wisdom.

A stone of communication, Lapis Lazuli balances the throat chakra. As the voice of the body, the throat chakra allows us to express the energy of our other chakras. If the throat chakra is blocked or out of balance, it affects our ability to communicate our thoughts and feelings. A healthy throat chakra allows free expression with your words aligned to your personal truth. Lapis Lazuli teaches power of the spoken word and can reverse curses or disease caused by not speaking out.

As a protection stone, Lapis Lazuli protects from psychic attacks, recognising and blocking them before returning the negative energy back to its source.

Lapis Lazuli is an excellent stone for meditation and manifestation. Draw in this strong manifestation energy by placing on the third eye whilst meditating on a that which you wish to manifest. Mentally picture your desires as already having been fulfilled.

Emotional benefits

Lapis Lazuli is a powerful thought amplifier. It stimulates the higher mind, enhancing intellectual ability and memory, increasing concentration and assisting in the process of learning. It helps to bring objectivity and clarity to our thoughts, supporting our knowledge, understanding and awareness of truth.

As already mentioned, Lapis Lazuli is a stone of communication. It brings harmony in relationships, encouraging honesty, understanding, compassion and self expression. It can be particularly useful in homes with children suffering from autism, attention deficit disorder or Asperger’s syndrome, providing a calmness and assisting them to express their feelings and thoughts.

Lapis Lazuli can help with anger by dissipating the anger and associated negative thoughts. It can help to bring suppressed thoughts and emotions to the surface, enabling them to be rationally resolved. It can quickly release stress replacing it with a sense of peace.

Lapis Lazuli is an excellent stone to help with physical issues in the throat and head. Benefiting the throat, larynx, vocal chords and thyroid it also helps with migraine pain (as well as pain in general), hearing loss, vertigo, and other issues related to the ear, nasal and sinus passages and tubes.

Lapis Lazuli is known to benefit to the nervous, respiratory and immune systems. Said to purify the blood, lower blood pressure and improve circulation and caridac rhythm it is also an excellent stone for the cardiovascular and circulatory systems.

This stone is reportedly beneficial for women suffering from issues related to female hormones, such as menstrual irregularities, pms, menopause and relieving the associated cramps.

Lapis Lazuli aids the nervous system and brain disorders, and is believed to help with autism, attention-deficit disorder, Asperger’s syndrome and anything else that my fall on the autistic spectrum.

How to use.

To get the most benefit from Lapis Lazuli, wear or place it at the throat or third eye or position it anywhere between sternum and top of head.

Alternatively, a gem essence or crystal elixir can be made with the stone, however it should be made using the indirect method due to Lapis Lazuli being a soft porous stone and also containing copper and sulphur (from the pyrite inclusions).
